This generative art piece is a geometric design exploration within the ecosystem of Autodesk Maya. The structure was built entirely using generative python scripting algorithms.
The Zobeide passage in Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’ tells the story of a city that aspired to be something perfect, but fell short. The men of the world gathered together and chased ‘the woman with long hair’, a metaphorical symbol of lust, desire and idealism. Thinking that they’d trapped her, they converged upon her, before realising that she had escaped and that they were left with nothing but themselves. The built-city Zobeide is testimony to man’s shortcomings, yet his stubborn, desperate and foolhardy desire to achieve perfection.
As the richness of this passage is in the reference to symbolic metaphors, so too is the generated work a metaphorical and abstract portrayal, rather than a literal image of a city. The triangle is a primary motif in this assortment of images. Symbolically and culturally, the apex of a triangle speaks to aspiration, which is the sentiment behind the passage. Furthermore, the fact that a triangle is connected in three points invokes the theological notions of a trinity and unity, which is evident in the way the men of the world ‘come together to build the city’. Finally, the sharp tips of the many triangles employed in this work suggest ‘a trap’, through the way that the point visually implies prickliness and danger. For these reasons, the triangle was the ideal geometry from which to develop this project.
The spiralling sequence of cubes is also a powerful visual metaphor within this work. These fluid paths further speak to the idea of unity, as they come to a central convergence point. In this way, they can represent the builders of Zobeide, who came from all walks of life in pursuit of a common aspiration. However, another powerful image within the passage was that of the woman’s flowing hair. The generated spiral was also intended as a reference to this imagery, with its curves indicative of hair strands.
