Watch Out

2014
Watch Out is critical design that encourages participants to consider their habits, approaches and feelings toward time management. Too often in our modern world we feel starved for time. The aim of this piece is to encourage consideration of the ways in which we might feel more in control of time, by reducing the amount spent on the unneccessary. The computer game, "Watch Out", sets the scene by fostering a stress response from the user. This is generated from the fact that the moment the game starts the player is running out of time. To remain in play, the user needs to score chunks of 'time' by matching coloured blocks. Doing so pushes the score ahead of the game clock, which is incrementing gradually in hot pursuit. The metaphor is made literal by the fact that the game takes place about a watch face. The progressively faster ticking of a grandfather clock in the background adds powerfully to the rising tension. "Watch Out" operates with a simple game mechanic. However it is this simplicity that provides space for thought of the best strategies to 'stay alive' longer in the game and achieve a higher score. Accompanying this work is a Manifesto for Time Management. This document is a collection of punchy statements, which describe my design mantra at the end of my undergraduate University career. "Watch Out" was exhibited at Victoria University of Wellington, School of Design at the conclusion of CCDN331: Live Theory in June, 2014.
