Roots

2013
"Roots" was my first foray into modelling, rigging and animating a creature from scratch in Autodesk Maya. This was the first University project that really demanded copious amounts of caffeine, in order to hand-in before the submission deadline. Needless to say it was a lot of work... but also incredibly rewarding. The final output was a short animated sequence, which you can view below: Meet Lyc. He's a space jumper. Just recently Lyc was forced to crash land his little star fighter, on this strange planet, filled with tall trees as far as the eye could see! Now, you'd think that crashing your intergalactic ride would be a bit of a day-ruiner, but not for Lyc! Oh no, in fact, this sort of literal downer is actually quite commonplace for him. Lyc doesn't moan or complain - he's got no time for that when the most important thing to do is to fix his ship and become airborne again. Lyc is short of words, but not short of action. This determined little guy will face any challenge, because he's got a secret weapon: Lyc is not alone! When the going gets tough, Lyc gets going. By drilling himself into the ground, he can split his fragile frame in half, revealing two new Lycs within the remains of the first. Lyc can multiply exponentially - you know what they say about many hands... Unfortunately, Lyc is not very environmentally conscious, and so he leaves traces of his white ruptured frames behind him on each of the planets his visits. So it's easy to discover where Lyc has been, but almost impossible to know where he'll end up next! You'd best look out, or else Lyc might be crashing in on a planet near yours soon! Meet Lyc. He's a head lice. But don't hold that against him for too long. Because... ... he grows on you.
