‘Digitarium’ is an abstract computer-generated post-production piece that presents a city degenerating down into the simple cube primitive. Initially panning around buildings, the viewer is then thrust outwards into a bird’s eye perspective whereupon they realize that the city is a mere texture upon a cube face.
The first step in realising this piece was to establish a 3D cityscape in Autodesk Maya. Building structures were imported from the free-to-use 'Futuristic Buildings' pack provided by Andrew Kramer and the Video Copilot team. With the addition of sweeping camera angles and an origami-esque folding cube animation, the resultant sequences were bought into Adobe After Effects. This was to achieve colour correction and the addition of post-production effects, such as the static lightning which is prevalent throughout the video.
While the notion of a digital city being swallowed up by a massive, energized cube is somewhat alarming, the audio track helps to assert a more calming mood. Adjo’s ‘Field of Dreams’ utilizes synthesizers and digitally manipulated sound effects to achieve a futuristic lounge ambiance.
